Ex Drummer is a Belgian film from 2007 directed by Koen Mortier. It revolves around a Danish writer named Dries who is asked by a local punk band called "The Feminists" to become their drummer for an upcoming performance. However, Dries is not a musician and is more of an intellectual, but he agrees to join the band anyway, and soon they are on their way to the performance of a lifetime.

The movie is set in the city of Ostend, which has seen better days, and is full of grimy, rundown buildings and a sense of hopelessness. The characters in Ex Drummer are equally down on their luck, and their lives are characterized by various forms of dysfunction. The band members are all violent and twisted individuals with their own set of issues, ranging from drug addiction to sexual deviance.

When Dries joins the band, he is initially reluctant to participate in their destructive antics. However, he soon finds himself drawn into their dark world and becomes an active participant in their depravity. The other members of the band have their own reasons for wanting Dries to join them, and it is gradually revealed that they possess a hidden agenda.

The movie is shot using a mixture of handheld camera work and stylized visuals, with a lot of emphasis placed on visual imagery that conveys the sense of urban decay and nihilism. The cinematography is stark and gritty, with a muted color palette that reflects the bleakness of the characters' lives.

One of the defining features of Ex Drummer is its use of music. The film features a soundtrack of punk rock and noise music that is loud, abrasive, and often disturbing. The music blends perfectly with the onscreen action, creating a sense of chaotic energy and frenzy that mirrors the characters' emotional states.

The performances in Ex Drummer are all excellent, particularly from the three lead actors: Dries Vanhegen, Norman Baert, and Gunter Lamoot. Each actor brings a powerful intensity to their role, and they are all convincing in their portrayal of deeply flawed characters. Vanhegen, in particular, stands out for his portrayal of Dries, who is simultaneously sympathetic and disturbing.

Ex Drummer is not a film for everyone. It is disturbing, bleak, and often difficult to watch. However, it is also a film that is impossible to forget, with its unflinching depiction of nihilism and brutality. It is a movie that will stick with you long after the credits have rolled, and it is a testament to the power of cinema to provoke and challenge its audience. If you are looking for a visceral and intense experience, then Ex Drummer is definitely worth a watch.

Ex Drummer is a 2007 comedy. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9 and a MetaScore of 36.
