"Evil Angel" is a 2009 horror/thriller film starring Ving Rhames, Ava Gaudet, and Kristopher Shepard. The film follows the story of John (Shepard), a young man who is released from a mental institution after suffering a breakdown that led to the accidental death of his father. John hopes to start a new life with his girlfriend, Mary (Gaudet), but soon finds himself tormented by a malevolent spirit that seems to have followed him from the hospital.
As John's mental state deteriorates, he becomes increasingly convinced that the spirit is real and that it is trying to drive him insane. Mary tries to help John by finding a way to banish the spirit, but she soon discovers that the truth about John's past is much darker than she ever imagined.
Ving Rhames plays the role of Detective Starks, a police officer investigating a series of murders that are linked to John's past. As the story unfolds, Detective Starks becomes convinced that John is the killer, but the truth turns out to be much more complicated than he anticipated.
One of the standout features of "Evil Angel" is its use of atmosphere and tension to create a sense of unease throughout the film. The use of sound and lighting is particularly effective in this regard, with the film's soundtrack and cinematography working together to create a haunting and often disturbing tone.
The acting in the film is also notable, with all three leads delivering strong performances that help to elevate the material. Shepard does an excellent job of conveying John's increasing fear and paranoia, while Gaudet brings depth and nuance to her role as the supportive but increasingly worried Mary. Rhames, as always, is a commanding presence on screen and imbues his character with a sense of gravitas that helps to ground the film's more supernatural elements.
The script, written by Richard Dutcher, does a good job of blending elements of traditional horror with psychological thriller elements. While there are a few jump scares and moments of gore, the focus of the film is more on creating an unsettling sense of ambiguity around John's mental state and the nature of the spirit that is tormenting him.
Overall, "Evil Angel" is a solid horror/thriller that should please fans of both genres. It's not a perfect film â there are a few plot holes and moments of contrivance â but it's well-made and features strong performances from its cast. If you're looking for a creepy and atmospheric movie to watch on a dark and stormy night, "Evil Angel" is definitely worth a look.
