Everybody's Talking About Jamie is a heartwarming and joyful musical film that tells the story of a young boy named Jamie New, who dreams of becoming a drag queen. The film is inspired by a true story and is based on a successful stage musical of the same name. The film follows Jamie (Max Harwood), a 16-year-old high school student from Sheffield, England. Jamie has never felt like he fits in anywhere--not with his classmates, his teachers, or even his own family. He's always felt like an outsider, and he feels like he's been living a lie by pretending to be someone he's not.
One day, Jamie decides to come out to his best friend, Pritti (Lauren Patel), who accepts him for who he is. Encouraged by her support, Jamie decides to pursue his dream of becoming a drag queen. He comes up with the stage name "Mimi Me" and starts practicing his makeup and dance moves.
However, Jamie faces a lot of obstacles along the way. His father (Ralph Ineson) doesn't approve of his son's dream and is embarrassed by Jamie's "weird" behavior. Jamie's teacher, Miss Hedge (Sharon Horgan), is also unsupportive and tries to discourage him from pursuing his passion.
Despite these setbacks, Jamie refuses to give up. With the help of his mother (Sarah Lancashire) and his friends, he sets out to pursue his dream of performing in drag on stage.
The film features a stellar cast, with Max Harwood standing out as the lead. Harwood's performance is both charismatic and vulnerable, as he captures Jamie's struggles and determination with authenticity and heart. Lauren Patel is also excellent as Pritti, Jamie's best friend and supportive ally. Sarah Lancashire delivers a touching and nuanced performance as Jamie's mother, who loves her son unconditionally but struggles to understand him.
The music in the film is catchy and uplifting, with songs like "Out of the Darkness" and "It Means Beautiful" perfectly capturing Jamie's journey towards self-acceptance and embracing who he is.
One of the strengths of Everybody's Talking About Jamie is its portrayal of drag culture. The film celebrates this art form and shows how it can be a source of empowerment and self-expression. The film also challenges traditional notions of masculinity and femininity, and shows how performers like Jamie can blur the lines between these gender roles.
Overall, Everybody's Talking About Jamie is a touching and uplifting film about a young boy who dares to dream big and pursue his passion for drag. With standout performances, infectious music, and a message of acceptance and self-love, this film is sure to leave viewers feeling inspired and uplifted.
