Each Dawn I Die is a 1939 crime drama film directed by William Keighley and starring James Cagney, George Raft, and Jane Bryan. The plot revolves around Frank Ross, a newspaper reporter who is wrongly accused of a crime and is sentenced to a long prison term. In prison, he is befriended by "Hood" Stacey, a notorious criminal who helps Ross clear his name and expose the corrupt officials responsible for his imprisonment.

The film opens with Frank Ross (James Cagney) investigating a story about a corrupt politician, while his friend and photographer, "Gyp" (Glen Read) takes photographs of the politician's luxurious home. However, things soon take a turn for the worse when the police arrest Ross for a crime he did not commit. He is accused of taking a bribe from the politician he was investigating, and is sentenced to twenty years in prison.

Once in prison, Ross meets Hood Stacey (George Raft), a hardened criminal who takes Ross under his wing. Stacey is the leader of a group of inmates who are planning a prison break, but Ross is not interested in getting involved. However, when Stacey is attacked by a group of inmates and left for dead, Ross comes to his aid and earns his gratitude.

As they become closer, Stacey reveals that he has information that could clear Ross's name. He tells Ross that the real culprit is the politician's lawyer, who framed Ross to protect his client. Stacey also reveals that the corrupt warden of the prison, Gleason (Victor Jory), is involved in the conspiracy and is making a fortune by allowing the prisoners to work as free labor for a construction company.

Together, Ross and Stacey hatch a plan to escape from prison and bring the corrupt officials to justice. With the help of Gyp, they manage to break out of prison and go on the run. However, they soon discover that the authorities are closing in and they must act fast to prove Ross's innocence.

Along the way, Ross falls in love with a young woman named Joyce Connington (Jane Bryan), who believes in his innocence and helps him in his quest for justice. However, as they come closer to uncovering the truth, they find themselves in grave danger and must fight for their lives against the corrupt officials who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden.

Each Dawn I Die is a classic crime drama that features outstanding performances from James Cagney and George Raft. Cagney delivers a nuanced performance as the innocent reporter who is thrown into a world of corruption and violence, while Raft is equally impressive as the hardened criminal with a heart of gold. The film is well-crafted and suspenseful, with a tight plot that keeps the audience on edge until the very end.
