Dust Be My Destiny is a 1939 romance drama inspired by a story by Robert Rossen. Directed by Lewis Seiler, the film stars John Garfield as Joe Bell, a young man who has just served his time in jail and is determined to start a new life. Priscilla Lane plays Mabel Alden, a young and wealthy heiress living in Southern California who has become disillusioned with her life and is looking for a way out.
Joe Bell, an ex-con, manages to escape jail and lands on a train heading towards Southern California. On the train, he meets fellow passenger Mabel Alden, who is fascinated by the attractive, mysterious stranger. But when the train is stopped by police, Joe is forced to flee and Mabel is left with no idea of what became of him.
Joe, who is determined to stay out of jail and build a new life for himself, takes up residence in an abandoned building in the city. He soon meets a group of drifters and begins to work with them. They show him how to evade the authorities and survive on the streets. However, Joe doesn't want to end up like these people, and dreams of something more for himself.
Meanwhile, Mabel is being consumed by her own inner turmoil. She comes from a wealthy family and is engaged to a wealthy lawyer, but has become disillusioned with her useless lifestyle. She wants to break free from the constraints of her life and do something worthy of it.
One day, Mabel finds Joe's hidden hideaway and decides to pay him a visit. From their first interaction, an unlikely love story is born between two people from completely different worlds. Joe is reluctant to get involved with Mabel, knowing that it could be dangerous and an obstacle in his goal of starting a new life. Mabel, on the other hand, is intrigued by the dangerous, exciting lifestyle Joe leads.
As the plot progresses, Joe must grapple with the possibility of returning to jail, and Mabel must decide whether to follow her heart or the wishes of her family. Will their love be able to withstand the challenges imposed by society and their respective backgrounds?
Dust Be My Destiny is filled with scene-stealing performances, especially from John Garfield, who masterfully portrays his character's gritty determination and street smarts. Priscilla Lane provides a fantastic contrast as the wealthy heiress who discovers the joy of being free from the expectations of her upper-class upbringing.
Lewis Seiler's direction pulls the viewer in and keeps them invested in the characters throughout the movie. The film also has a great score, and the black and white cinematography perfectly captures the grit and drama of the story.
Overall, Dust Be My Destiny is a movie that has everything â a compelling storyline, excellent performances, gripping drama, and a great love story. It's not hard to see why the film gained a cult following and has deservedly become a classic of its time.
