Dunston Checks In is a family comedy from 1996 that tells the story of a luxury hotel called the Majestic, which is preparing for a high-profile event that will be attended by some of the world's most important people. However, the hotel's manager, Robert Grant (played by Jason Alexander), is worried because he knows that the hotel's success or failure depends on the whim of its guests, who can be picky and demanding.
Things take a turn for the worse when a jewel thief, Lord Rutledge (played by Rupert Everett), arrives at the hotel, accompanied by his pet orangutan, Dunston. Lord Rutledge intends to use the hotel room as a base for his heist, but Dunston has other ideas. The orangutan is tired of being mistreated by Lord Rutledge, and as soon as he sees Robert's son Kyle (played by Eric Lloyd) in the hotel lobby, he decides to make a break for it and seek refuge with the boy.
Kyle is thrilled to have a new friend, and he takes Dunston to his suite, where they hang out and enjoy each other's company. Things get even better when Kyle discovers that Dunston has a talent for mischief and pranks, and they embark on a series of adventures that include playing practical jokes on hotel staff and guests, riding elevators, and sliding down laundry chutes.
Meanwhile, Lord Rutledge realizes that Dunston is missing and sets out to find him, which puts him in direct conflict with Robert and the hotel staff. Robert is desperate to avoid any negative publicity, and he tasks his head of security, Mrs. Dubrow (played by Faye Dunaway), with catching Dunston and returning him to Lord Rutledge. However, things get complicated when Mrs. Dubrow discovers that Lord Rutledge is actually a wanted criminal and that the orangutan is a valuable witness against him.
As the tension rises in the hotel, Kyle and Dunston continue to have fun and bond over their shared love of mischief. However, their innocent adventures soon put them in danger, and they find themselves at the center of a dangerous game of cat and mouse between Lord Rutledge and the hotel staff.
Dunston Checks In is a fun and lighthearted comedy that is perfect for families and children. The movie is full of slapstick humor and silly pranks, and it will keep young audiences entertained and engaged from beginning to end. The cast is excellent, with Jason Alexander delivering a solid performance as the harried hotel manager, and Eric Lloyd stealing the show as the mischievous and adorable Kyle. Rupert Everett is also excellent as the conniving Lord Rutledge, and Faye Dunaway adds a touch of gravitas to the proceedings as the stern and no-nonsense Mrs. Dubrow.
