Drained is a Brazilian drama-thriller movie that was released in the year 2006. The film was directed by Heitor Dhalia and features Selton Mello, Paula Braun, and Paulo Alves in the lead roles. The story of Drained revolves around a local bar owner named Nildo, who helps people to get rid of their past traumatic experiences and negative emotions, by encouraging them to speak about their problems while making them drink a special potion that he has prepared. Nildo's method is a bit unorthodox as he often uses hypnosis, music, and psychoactive substances to make people confront their deepest fears and anxieties.
The film opens with the introduction of Julio (Selton Mello) who is a handsome and reserved young man with a complicated past that has left him unable to trust anyone. Julio comes across Nildo's bar by chance and after some initial reluctance, he agrees to try Nildo's method to confront his inner demons.
Nildo brews a special concoction for Julio and makes him consume it while hypnotizing him. The scenes that follow show Julio going through different stages of hallucination and facing his traumatic memories one by one. The entire process is intense and emotionally draining.
Meanwhile, we get to know more about Nildo's past and how he had discovered the power of hypnotism and psychoactive substances when he was a victim of incest during his childhood. Nildo, who is also shown to be a poet, uses his skill to communicate with people and to make them see what lies deep inside their psyche.
As the movie progresses, Julio starts getting more and more involved with Nildo and his world. He meets other people, who have come to Nildo's bar to get rid of their problems, and also starts to develop feelings for a beautiful girl named Monica (Paula Braun). However, the closer Julio gets to Nildo and his methods, the more he realizes that there is something sinister and dangerous about it.
Drained is a movie that deals with some very sensitive and taboo subjects, such as incest, sexual abuse, trauma, and substance abuse. Director Heitor Dhalia has done an excellent job of handling such delicate themes and has presented them in a way that is thought-provoking, disturbing, and at times even beautiful.
The acting performances in the movie are top-notch, especially Selton Mello as Julio and Paulo Alves as Nildo. Both actors have portrayed their characters with such depth and nuance that it's hard not to get emotionally invested in their journey.
Overall, Drained is a movie that is not meant for everyone. The movie requires patience, an open mind, and a strong stomach as it can be quite graphic and intense at times. However, if you are willing to take the plunge, it's a movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
