As a professional loan officer, Christine Brown's (Alison Lohman) main goal is to move up the corporate ladder, but unfortunately her thriftiness and the of her coworker's lack of compassion lead her to make an unpopular decision: denying an old gypsy woman, Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver), an extension on her mortgage. In response, Mrs. Ganush publicly humiliates Christine and places a curse on her, promising to drag her to hell in three days.
With Christine's life now on the line, a battle between good and evil begins as she seeks the help of a psychic, Shaun San Dena (Adriana Barraza). Dena is able to provide some short-term relief, but it is only a matter of time before the curse creeps up on Christine again.
As Christine gets closer to her inevitable doom, she turns to her skeptical boyfriend, Clay Dalton (Justin Long). While Clay initially dismisses Christine's fears, both he and his family become entangled in the battle for Christine's soul. As Christine is confronted with demon possessions, a burial ground for Mrs. Ganush, and sinister supernatural forces, Clay's faith in her is put to the test.
Amidst all the chaos, Christine discovers that the only way to lift the curse is by offering it to someone else, but to whom? And at what cost? The movie culminates in an epic showdown between Christine and the evil forces that are determined to drag her to hell, stretching her to the brink of what she thought was possible.
Throughout the movie, there is a clear juxtaposition between Christine's desire for upward mobility and her moral compass. Her greed and lack of compassion towards Mrs. Ganush, whom she sees as an obstacle in her career advancement, lead her down a treacherous path. Christine must ultimately face the consequences of her actions, and the film offers a cautionary tale about the weight of immoral choices.
