In the rural outskirts of Rome, two friends named Vittorio (Luca Marinelli) and Cesare (Alessandro Borghi) are living a wild and carefree life. They spend their days partying, doing drugs, and trying to make a quick buck by any means necessary. However, their insatiable appetite for pleasure and excitement masks their deep-seated insecurities and unresolved emotional traumas.
Vittorio, a wannabe writer with a painful past, struggles to find his place in the world and constantly seeks validation from others. Cesare, on the other hand, is a charismatic but reckless womanizer who lives for the moment and doesn't care about the consequences of his actions.
Their hedonistic existence is disrupted when they meet Linda (Silvia D'Amico), a beautiful and mysterious woman who seems to offer them the possibility of a meaningful connection. As their relationship with Linda deepens, Vittorio and Cesare start questioning their lifestyle and their values, realizing that they might be on a path of self-destruction.
Directed by Claudio Caligari, "Don't Be Bad" (aka "Non essere cattivo") is a powerful and gritty movie that explores the themes of friendship, addiction, and the universal human desire for happiness. Set in the late 80s, when Italy was going through a period of social and economic turmoil, the film portrays the lives of young people who feel alienated and disillusioned by the world around them, and who seek refuge in drugs and petty crime.
The performances of the three main actors are outstanding, especially Luca Marinelli as Vittorio, who delivers a nuanced and heartbreaking portrayal of a man struggling to come to terms with his past and his identity. Alessandro Borghi is also impressive as Cesare, who embodies the reckless and impulsive spirit of youth, but also shows moments of vulnerability and tenderness.
The cinematography and the soundtrack of the movie create a vivid and immersive atmosphere, capturing the beauty and the despair of the Italian countryside, and the pulsating energy of the nightlife scene. The film also features some intense and violent scenes, which might be disturbing for some viewers.
Overall, "Don't Be Bad" is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged movie that speaks to the complexities of the human psyche and the importance of self-awareness and self-acceptance. It is a must-see for fans of Italian cinema and anyone interested in exploring the dark side of youth culture.
