Dobaara: See Your Evil is a 2017 Indian horror movie directed by Prawaal Raman. The film features a cast comprising of Adil Hussain, Huma Qureshi, Saqib Saleem, Lisa Ray and Madalina Bellariu Ion in key roles. The movie is a remake of the 2013 American horror movie, Oculus and is a story of a haunted antique mirror. The story revolves around two siblings, Alex Merchant and his younger sister, Natasha Merchant. Both the siblings are on a quest to unravel the mystery of a haunted antique mirror that has been the reason for their family's tragedy in the past. Alex, who was convicted of killing his parents, is finally out of the psychiatric clinic after serving his sentence. Natasha, on the other hand, has been fighting to prove Alex's innocence all these years, believing that the haunted mirror was the actual reason behind their parent's death, and not her brother.
The movie takes us on a journey through various timelines â present, past and parallel world â and weaves a story around the impact of the haunted mirror on the Merchant family. We see Alex and Natasha attempting to destroy the mirror to end the curse, but the real evil seems to be more powerful than their will to destroy it.
Adil Hussain as Alex, the elder sibling, gives a commendable performance as a man fighting to prove his innocence while struggling with the reality of the haunted mirror. Huma Qureshi does a fabulous job playing the role of Natasha, who is equally passionate about proving her brother's innocence and unraveling the mystery of the cursed antique mirror. Lisa Ray as the sibling's mother is a revelation, and her scenes are emotionally charged.
Madalina Bellariu Ion as the cursed mirror's victim is suitably creepy, and her transformation into a demonic entity is well executed. The horror scenes and jump scares in the movie are well-placed and timed, ensuring a good scare for the audience.
The background score and cinematography of the movie are noteworthy, adding to the overall eerie effect. The movie is not just about jump scares and horror scenes; it is also a story of family, love, and sacrifice. The plot is multilayered, and the concept of the cursed mirror is intriguing. The audience is kept guessing till the very end, creating an element of suspense throughout.
Despite a promising premise and a stellar cast, the movie fails to deliver on its potential fully. There are moments where the movie feels slow, and the plot could have been tighter. The movie deviates from the original story at certain points, which may not appeal to fans of the 2013 version. Despite these pitfalls, the movie manages to keep you hooked till the very end, with the climax being the highlight of the movie.
Dobaara: See Your Evil is an excellent attempt at making a horror movie that relies on a compelling story more than just cheap scares. It creates an eerie atmosphere throughout, and the performances are top-notch. It is a good watch for those who enjoy multidimensional storylines with elements of horror and suspense.
