Different from Whom (2009) is an Italian romantic comedy co-written and directed by Umberto Carteni. Set in Rome, the film revolves around the story of the openly gay Piero (Luca Argentero) who runs for local office as a member of the communist party. Piero is still in love with his ex-girlfriend, Adele (Claudia Gerini), who also happens to be his opponent in the elections.

Piero, a high school teacher, is an active member of the Italian Communist Party. He is passionate about politics and social justice, but at the same time, he is also an out-and-proud gay man. When the local communist party needs a new candidate for a city council seat, Piero volunteers for the position. However, his candidature is met with skepticism by certain members of the party, questioning whether his sexual orientation could affect his political career. Nonetheless, he perseveres and ends up being the official candidate.

Meanwhile, Adele, a successful lawyer, is the candidate of the Democratic Party, opposing Piero from the same constituency. Piero has been in love with Adele since they were teenagers, and seeing her again revives his feelings for her. Although Adele is initially wary of Piero's candidature and campaign, she eventually warms up to him when she sees his genuine desire to bring change and his commitment to the issues that matter in their community.

The chemistry between Piero and Adele adds a romantic subplot to the film, as both characters try to navigate their feelings for each other amidst the tensions of the campaign. At the same time, different aspects of Piero's life and personality come to the fore, including his family relationships, his friendships, and his activism.

One of the film's themes is the clash of ideologies and political forces within the larger framework of Italian society. Different from Whom humorously explores the political landscape of contemporary Italy, delving into the country's social and cultural make-up. The film presents Italy as a complex mosaic of different cultures, identities, and perspectives, united by the common desire for a better future.

The film also challenges stereotypes and prejudices regarding homosexuality and politics, depicting Piero as a well-rounded character who defies the norm. As a gay man and a communist candidate, Piero embodies the complexities and contradictions of human nature, pushing against the boundaries of societal norms and expectations.

Different from Whom creates a world where characters are not limited by their sexual orientation, profession, or political allegiance. It portrays an Italy that is diverse, colorful, and full of surprises - a country where love, acceptance, and respect can conquer differences.

The film features a talented cast, including Luca Argentero as Piero, Claudia Gerini as Adele, and Filippo Nigro as Tommaso, Piero's best friend and campaign manager. The performances are nuanced and engaging, with each actor bringing their unique style and personality to their respective characters.

In conclusion, Different from Whom is a heartwarming and entertaining romantic comedy that offers a fresh perspective on politics, sexuality, and identity. The film showcases a rich and diverse Italy, where love and politics can come together to bring about change and transform lives.
