Deuces Wild is a 2002 drama film directed by Scott Kalvert and starring Stephen Dorff, Brad Renfro, Fairuza Balk, and Norman Reedus. The movie is set in Brooklyn during the late 1950s, when gangs ruled the streets. The plot follows the young members of the Deuces gang, a tight-knit group of street kids who are fiercely loyal to one another. They are led by Leon (Dorff) and his brother Bobby (Renfro), who are struggling to retain control of their territory in the midst of a vicious turf war with rival gang the Vipers. Matters are further complicated by the arrival of a new girl, Annie (Balk), who quickly captures Bobby's heart.
As tensions rise between the two gangs, the Deuces are forced to confront some harsh realities about their loyalty, their code of honor, and their ability to survive in a world that is rapidly changing around them. Along the way, they also have to deal with personal demons, family drama, and the harsh realities of life on the streets.
At the heart of the movie is the relationship between Leon and Bobby, which is a complex and difficult one. Leon is protective and domineering, while Bobby is more impulsive and reckless. Both actors do an excellent job of conveying the complicated emotions that drive their characters, and their performances anchor the movie.
The supporting cast is also strong, with Balk bringing depth and nuance to her role as Annie, and Reedus (who would go on to play Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead) putting in a memorable turn as the unhinged drug dealer Marco.
One of the highlights of the movie is its vivid portrayal of 1950s Brooklyn. The sets, costumes, and music all help to create a rich and immersive atmosphere, and the camera work is stylish without being distracting. It's clear that the filmmakers were committed to creating a believable and authentic world, and their efforts pay off beautifully.
Although Deuces Wild can be quite violent at times, it is ultimately a story about loyalty, brotherhood, and the bonds that hold us together. It's a movie that is at once gritty and touching, and it deserves a place among the best films about gangs and street life.
Deuces Wild is a 2002 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 36 minutes. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.6 and a MetaScore of 16.
