Deranged is a psychological horror movie that was released in 1974. The film was directed by Alan Ormsby and Jeff Gillen, and stars Roberts Blossom in the lead role of Ezra Cobb, a reclusive and disturbed man who lives alone with his mother in rural Wisconsin. The movie opens with Ezra's mother's funeral, and we soon learn that she was the only person Ezra ever truly loved. With her gone, Ezra's fragile grip on reality begins to slip. He maintains the illusion that she is still alive by bringing her corpse back to their home, where he sets up a shrine to her, complete with wax candles, fresh flowers, and a blue dress that she used to wear.

As time passes, Ezra becomes more and more isolated, shunning all human contact and focusing solely on his mother's decaying body. He begins to experiment with embalming fluids and other chemicals to preserve her, but the outcome is increasingly disturbing. His obsession with his mother intensifies, and he starts to believe that she is still alive, feeding her and having one-sided conversations with her.

When a group of teenagers go missing in the area, police begin to investigate, and Ezra's behavior becomes more erratic as he tries to keep his secret hidden. Along the way, we see flashbacks revealing Ezra's traumatic childhood, which made him the unstable person he is today.

The movie is disturbing and unsettling, particularly because it is based on the true story of a Wisconsin man named Ed Gein, who murdered two women in the 1950s and was discovered to have been using their body parts to create macabre household items, much like Ezra in the film. The movie is grim, with a lot of focus on death and decay, and the atmosphere is oppressive, with the rural setting and the perpetual darkness.

The acting, particularly by Blossom, who gives a haunting and disturbing performance, is superb. The movie is well-directed and well-written, with a lot of attention to detail and atmosphere. It is a character-driven piece that delves into the depths of human depravity and the fragility of the human mind.

Deranged is not a movie for everyone, and it can be quite disturbing and graphic at times. However, fans of horror cinema and suspenseful psychological dramas will find a lot to appreciate in this underrated gem. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll, and while it's not the easiest movie to watch, it's definitely worth checking out for fans of the genre.

Deranged is a 1974 crime movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 22 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3.
