In 2014, paranormal investigator Zak Bagans purchased a house in Gary, Indiana which purportedly had a history of demonic possession and mysterious deaths. Bagans, known for his role as the host of the popular TV series Ghost Adventures, intended to conduct an extensive investigation of the house to prove or disprove its haunted nature. His findings were chronicled in the 2019 documentary film Demon House.
The movie begins with a disclaimer stating that the events depicted in the film are based on eyewitness accounts and real occurrences, though certain elements have been dramatized for cinematic effect. From the outset, the tone is ominous, as Bagans describes the events leading up to his acquisition of the house. He claims that he first learned of it from a Huffington Post article about a family who had fled the property claiming that it was infested with demons. The article included footage of the family's son walking up a wall, supposedly under demonic influence.
Bagans is intrigued by the possibility of such phenomena and decides to purchase the house, despite warnings from locals that it is cursed. He and his crew set up cameras and begin investigating the property, which they find to be filled with strange odors, unexplained cold spots, and an overwhelming feeling of malevolence. They interview the former occupants of the house, who tell harrowing stories of possessions, blackouts, and suicide attempts. Bagans also consults with a local Catholic priest, who confirms that exorcisms have been conducted on the property in the past.
As the investigation continues, Bagans and his crew experience increasingly frightening phenomena, including scratches on their bodies, disembodied voices, and objects moving on their own. They invite various paranormal experts to the house, including a psychic medium and a demonologist, who both detect the presence of malevolent spirits. Bagans himself begins to experience bizarre dreams and visions, in which he sees himself being attacked by unseen forces.
Despite his growing fear, Bagans refuses to leave the property or halt his investigation. He spends long days and nights in the house, determined to capture evidence of the demonic presence. His health deteriorates under the strain, and he becomes increasingly obsessed with the house's secrets. He enlists the help of a filmmaker named Adam Ahlbrandt to document his experiences, hoping to create a definitive record of the demonic infestation.
The final act of the movie takes a dark turn, as Bagans and his crew uncover disturbing evidence of satanic rituals and animal sacrifices in the basement of the house. They find a makeshift altar, evidence of bloodletting, and strange symbols etched into the walls. They also discover a mysterious hole in the ground, which they believe may lead to a secret chamber. Bagans descends into the hole alone, armed only with a camera, and what he finds there changes his life forever.
Demon House is a chilling and suspenseful documentary that will appeal to fans of paranormal investigation shows like Ghost Adventures. Its use of real footage, eyewitness accounts, and expert analysis lends credibility to its claims, and the involvement of Zak Bagans adds a level of celebrity interest. The film's structure, which builds slowly to a climactic finale, is effective in generating tension and dread. The documentary's underlying themes of obsession, loss of sanity, and the occult will resonate with viewers long after the credits roll.
Demon House is a 2018 documentary with a runtime of 1 hour and 51 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.8.
