Deadpool 2, the sequel to the hugely popular 2016 film, once again stars the irreverent and irrepressible Ryan Reynolds as the titular superhero. This time around, Deadpool/Wade Wilson has to face a new threat in the form of Cable, a time-traveling soldier from the future played by Josh Brolin. Along the way, he also assembles a team of fellow mutants, known as X-Force, to help him take down the villain.
The film opens with Deadpool taking on various villains from around the world, while also maintaining his relationship with Vanessa, played by Morena Baccarin. However, a tragic event leaves Deadpool aimless and depressed, until he is approached by the mutant Colossus, who tries to convince him to join the X-Men. At the same time, Cable arrives from the future, intent on killing a young mutant named Russell (Julian Dennison), who he believes will grow up to become a dangerous killer.
Deadpool decides to protect Russell, despite the fact that the kid is difficult and somewhat annoying. Along with his loyal ally Weasel, played by T.J. Miller, Deadpool begins recruiting a team of mutants to help him in his mission. This includes the luck-manipulating Domino, played by Zazie Beetz, as well as a host of other quirky characters. Eventually, his team of misfits becomes known as X-Force.
As the team attempts to stop Cable and protect Russell, they encounter a number of obstacles and challenges. Along the way, they also confront their own emotional baggage and personal demons. One of the key themes of the film is the importance of family and connection in a world that can be cruel and brutal.
Of course, as with the first film, Deadpool 2 is more than just a standard superhero movie. It features plenty of fourth-wall-breaking humor, self-aware jokes, and meta-commentary on the genre as a whole. The film is also incredibly violent and graphic, with plenty of blood, gore, and dismemberment. However, this is all done in a cartoonish, over-the-top way that is more humorous than disturbing.
One of the standout performances in the film comes from Josh Brolin, who plays the villainous Cable with a mix of gruffness and vulnerability. His interactions with Deadpool provide some of the film's best moments, as the two characters clash and bond in equal measure. Ryan Reynolds, of course, is once again perfect in his portrayal of the wisecracking, foul-mouthed Deadpool.
Overall, Deadpool 2 is a worthy sequel that delivers more of what fans loved about the original film, while also offering something new and exciting. It's a fun, action-packed romp that doesn't take itself too seriously, but still manages to have heart and substance. Whether you're a longtime comic book fan or just looking for a good time at the movies, Deadpool 2 is definitely worth checking out.
