Dead Silence is a horror film about the legend of Mary Shaw, a female ventriloquist who, as legend tells, was responsible for the disappearance of one of the town's local children, Michael Ashen. As the movie begins, Jamie Ashen and his wife Lisa receive a package that contains a ventriloquist’s dummy from an unknown source. Both are familiar with the legend of Mary Shaw but simply brush things off. Jamie leaves Lisa while he goes to pick up their take-out order and returns to find his wife murdered. With no apparent suspects or any ideas, the responding officer, Detective Lipton, casts Jamie as the lead suspect.
Jamie journeys to his and Lisa's hometown to arrange for his wife's funeral and begins learning that there is a terrifying basis to the legend of Mary Shaw. Jamie soon learns that Mary Shaw was accused of abducting his great uncle, Michael, who was never found. The townspeople formed a mob and not only murdered Mary Shaw, but also cut out her tongue. The local funeral director informs Jamie that her final wish was to be turned into a doll herself. However, there have been issues of events since her death which spawned the saying, "Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children only dolls. And if you see her, do not scream, or she'll rip your tongue out by the seam."
Jamie soon learns that the truth behind his wife's death was due to the fact that his family is the center of Mary Shaw's curse and that the spirit of Mary Shaw is still very present, as well as the fact that the dolls are, indeed, possessed by her spirit. Jamie, in an attempt to stop the curse, sets out with Lipton to stop Shaw's spirit, only to find more horror awaiting him. The curse is revealed as Jamie also meets his horrific fate.
