Dead Cert is a British action-horror film set in London's seedy underworld of illegal boxing and the supernatural. The movie, directed by Steve Lawson, stars Craig Fairbrass as Freddy Frankham, the owner of an underground gym and boxing club in East London. Freddy is also the leader of a gang of criminals who are involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.
Jason Flemyng stars as Billy Ayres, one of Freddy's top fighters who is quite popular with the fans. However, when Billy gets involved with a mysterious woman named Amber (Coralie Rose), he unknowingly releases a group of vampires who are out for blood. Dexter Fletcher plays Elvis Harte, a vampire hunter who has been tracking the clan of undead for years and is determined to put an end to their reign of terror.
The movie kicks off with a big boxing match between Billy and another fighter, which sets the tone for the tension and violence that will ensue. Despite his success in the ring, Billy is troubled by personal issues and seeks solace in Amber, a sultry seductress who sucks him into her world of darkness. Meanwhile, Freddy and his gang are dealing with a rival gang who are trying to encroach on their territory, adding even more chaos to the already explosive situation.
As the vampires begin to emerge from the shadows, the stakes get higher and the body count rises. The revelation of the supernatural element is cleverly woven into the underlying crime story, making for a unique genre mash-up. The idea of combining the criminal underworld with vampires might seem cliché, but Dead Cert manages to breathe new life into this tired trope.
The acting is solid throughout, with Fairbrass delivering a strong performance as the gruff and intimidating Freddy. Fleyming is also excellent as Billy, portraying the character's inner turmoil and eventual transformation with conviction. Fletcher gives a standout performance as Elvis, the seasoned vampire slayer who brings a sense of gravitas to the proceedings.
The film's setting in East London helps to create a gritty and authentic atmosphere that enhances the story's sense of danger and intrigue. The use of practical effects for the gore and violence also makes the action sequences more visceral and impactful.
Overall, Dead Cert is a fun and entertaining ride that offers a fresh take on familiar horror tropes. The blend of crime drama and vampire horror works surprisingly well, making for a satisfying and enjoyable viewing experience. Fans of both genres will find something to enjoy in this exciting and well-crafted movie.
