Days of Grace is a Mexican crime thriller set in the backdrop of the 2002 World Cup. The movie portrays three different stories of people affected by the violence and corruption in Mexico City during three consecutive World Cups. The movie is directed by Everardo Gout and stars Carlos Bardem, Kristyan Ferrer, and Tenoch Huerta. The movie opens with the abduction of a young boy by a group of criminals who intend to extract ransom money from his father. The father is a high-ranking official in the Mexican government, and his profession complicates the negotiations with the kidnappers. Meanwhile, Arturo, a young and honest cop is assigned to investigate the case and rescue the boy. As the days pass by, the tension mounts, and the child's safety becomes a race against the clock.
The second story follows the life of a prisoner named Lupe, who is released from jail on the same day that the World Cup begins. Lupe reunites with his wife and son who eagerly await his return. But upon his arrival, Lupe realizes that the world has changed, and he finds it hard to adapt. His past criminal activities continue to haunt him, and the temptation to get back on the same path becomes too hard to resist.
In the third and final story, we see the life of a young man named Marcos, who becomes a member of a gang that operates during the World Cup. Marcos' life changes drastically since becoming a part of the gang, and he is quickly introduced to the hostile and violent world of Mexico City's gangs. Marcos learns that the gang life is not as glamorous as he initially thought when the gang is arrested by the police on suspicion of kidnapping.
The three stories intertwine and provide glimpses into the harsh and violent reality of Mexico City's criminal underworld. Throughout the movie, we witness how each character is affected by the corrupt and violent society in which they live. The movie depicts the struggle of ordinary people attempting to survive amidst the chaos, corruption, and violence that engulf their lives. Days of Grace shows us how the World Cup unites the country, but also how it reveals the ugly side of Mexico's society.
Days of Grace delivers strong performances from its cast, with Bardem, Ferrer, and Huerta providing standout performances as the three protagonists. The movie is visually stunning, utilizing handheld cameras and shadows to create an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension. The movie's somber tone is supported by the minimalist score that accompanies the movie, which expertly shifts from classical music to a tense and dark melody to match the ever-shifting mood of the story.
Overall, Days of Grace is a gripping and thought-provoking movie that shines a light on the darker side of Mexican society. It is an intense and tragic story that will leave you thinking long after the movie has ended. The movie is a must-watch for fans of crime thrillers and those who seek to understand the realities of life in modern-day Mexico.
