Daughter of the Wolf is a 2019 film that stars former MMA fighter Gina Carano as the protagonist, a tough-as-nails mercenary named Clair Hamilton who is hunting for her kidnapped son in the wilds of northern Canada. Narratively and visually, the movie is a thrilling ride into the heart of darkness, as Clair squares off against a ruthless gang of kidnappers led by violent criminal Larsen, played by Richard Dreyfuss.

The film opens with a shot of a feral wolf pack, descending upon a broad, open plain. It’s a vivid and atmospheric start, setting the tone for what’s to come as we hear the mournful sound of a wolf howl. And then, we meet Clair – a war veteran with specialized combat skills – in the middle of a barfight, establishing her as a tough but tortured outsider. The story quickly picks up pace as Clair drives out to her isolated family cabin, only to find that her estranged father’s dead body is lying in the snow outside. After she discovers that her son has been kidnapped by Larsen and his henchmen, the film quickly becomes a gritty action-thriller, with Clair on a desperate quest to rescue her child.

As Clair begins to track the kidnappers, she figures out that they’ve taken her son to a remote mountain, which they’ve booby-trapped to keep out unwanted guests. From there, Clair must use all of her survivalist skills, as well as her ruthless tactics, to get through the obstacles that stand between her and her child. Along the way, she meets a young man named Charlie, played by Anton Gillis-Adelman, who has run away from home and gotten mixed up with the gang. Charlie serves as a foil for Clair, with the two characters having a nuanced relationship that adds depth to the story.

Director David Hackl keeps the story focused and intense, and the cinematography is consistently beautiful. The snowy mountain location is visually stunning and the action scenes are well-staged, with a mixture of handheld and steady-cam shots keeping us immersed in the action. The film is also notable for the action sequences themselves, and the way that they are choreographed to show Clair’s effective use of martial arts and other fighting tactics. Gina Carano, who had made a name for herself in the MMA world before transitioning to acting, is a real highlight of the movie. She is both physically impressive and emotionally grounded in her portrayal of a mother who will do anything to save her child.

Brendan Fehr rounds out the cast as a local police officer, Scott, who teams up with Clair in her quest to save her son. Fehr plays the role with understated charm, and his chemistry with Carano is palpable. While his character initially seems like a potential romantic foil for Clair, his role develops more organically, with Scott becoming a valuable partner in her mission.

Daughter of the Wolf has its flaws, of course – some of the dialogue is clunky, and the pacing tends to drag in places. The film is also not always successful in building suspense, with some of the twists feeling a bit predictable. But ultimately, the movie succeeds on the strength of its premise, its cast, and the thrilling action scenes. While it may not reinvent the action-thriller genre, it does manage to deliver a satisfying and emotional story, with a strong female lead character who is a force to be reckoned with. It’s a film that showcases the talents of both its director and its star, and is definitely worth checking out for fans of the genre.

Daughter Of The Wolf is a 2019 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.5 and a MetaScore of 36.
