Dark Streets is a neo-noir musical drama set in the 1930s. The story revolves around Chaz Davenport (played by Gabriel Mann), the son of a wealthy businessman who owns a popular nightclub, the Club Ritz. As the owner of the club, Chaz is responsible for its success, but the sudden disappearance of his father plunges him into a world of uncertainty and danger.
With the help of his closest friends, including his associate, Jimmy (played by Elias Koteas), Chaz sets out to find his father and unravel the mystery surrounding his disappearance. But as he digs deeper into the case, he discovers that his father's disappearance is linked to a series of murders that have been plaguing the city.
As the night gets darker, Chaz becomes increasingly embroiled in a web of deceit, lust, and betrayal. He must navigate his way through the brutal underworld of organized crime, while also dealing with his own personal demons.
But despite the danger that surrounds him, Chaz finds solace in the music that he loves. The film features a number of original songs that are performed by the cast, all of which perfectly capture the mood and feel of the era.
The movie boasts an impressive cast, including Noel Arthur who plays a crooked cop named Miles, Sybil Azur who plays the seductive cigarette girl Crystal, and Pat Crawford Brown who plays the wise and nurturing bartender Auntie Mae. However, it is Gabriel Mann who steals the show with his effortless portrayal of Chaz. He effortlessly conveys the character's frustrations, fears, vulnerabilities, and his love for the music.
The film's production design is also noteworthy. The entire movie was shot on a soundstage, which created an elaborate set of the Club Ritz and the surrounding streets. The art direction, props, and costumes all contribute to the ambient style and mood of the film. The use of dim lighting and shadows, along with the props such as vintage radios, gramophones, hats, and coats, create the illusion of a bygone era.
While the plot can sometimes be overly convoluted, the film's strong cast and stunning visuals make up for any shortcomings. It is an engaging and atmospheric film that perfectly captures the seedy underbelly of the 1930s underworld. The noir elements, including the femme fatale, the flawed protagonist, and the corrupt system, all come together perfectly to create a world that is both nostalgic and haunting.
Dark Streets is a movie that is a must-watch for fans of film noir, music enthusiasts, and anyone who loves a good mystery. It is a film that holds its own against the classics of the genre, and is sure to keep you entertained from beginning to end.
