Danton is a French language film that follows the last months of Georges Danton. He was one of the leaders in the French Revolution. This film was adapted from a play in Poland called the Danton Case. Gerard Depardieu stars as the main character. This film is an international production effort between film companies in France, Poland, and West Germany.
The movie is set in the year 1794. This is when the Reign of Terror was at its peak. Danton, along with all carriages entering the city of Paris had to be searched before they were able to enter. While the search is being conducted the movie shows what Paris would have looked like at that time. There are images of people that are cold, hungry, and sick. When Denton gets through the checkpoint he is swarmed by hungry people that are looking for his help.
Leaders during this time are not too fond of Danton. Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety considered having him executed but decided not to. They realize if they executed Danton the public would revolt against them.
Danton and Robespierre have a meeting. Robespierre wants Danton to fight for his cause. He does not have to be forced to have him executed. Danton ignores his advice. Robespierre feeling that he has no other choice in the matter has Danton throw in jail. Danton knows that he can resist the arrest but he does not. He is tired of watching people fight and die so he goes along with the officers.
During his trail Danton often broke the rules of the court. He spoke out of turn and disobeys the rules. He is found guilty and is sentenced to death. Danton is depressed because he has failed his people. Once Danton is executed Robespierre realizes that he has done more harm than good in ending the revolution.
