The title character is a poet and swordsman who has an abnormally large nose. He is in love with a woman named Roxanne, but believes she would find his nose repugnant. A friend of his is also smitten by Roxanne, but is too shy to tell her. He also lacks a way of words, so he ask Cyrano to help him court Roxanne.
