In Crime Zone, a dystopian society has taken over the world and life is anything but easy. The wealthy and powerful live in a protected, high-tech city called The Zone, while the poor and decaying masses live outside The Zone in what's left of civilization. The movie kicks off with a group of malcontents living in a dreary, decaying wasteland outside of The Zone. They are fed up with their pitiful existence and desperately want to escape to the utopia that is The Zone.
They eventually discover a way into The Zone, but quickly realize that things aren't as they seem. They soon find themselves pursued by the security forces of The Zone and must fight for their lives while trying to survive and uncover the truth about this supposed utopia.
The movie's themes are clearly drawn from the cyberpunk movement of the 80s, with its dystopian vision of the future, and its focus on social outcasts and downtrodden working classes who struggle against an oppressive system. Throughout the film, the characters battle a totalitarian authority that promises the populace a brighter future but delivers only inequality, brutality, and decay.
Throughout the movie, viewers can enjoy strong performances from David Carradine, Peter Nelson, and Sherilyn Fenn, who all deliver top-notch performances. Carradine, in particular, stands out as the enigmatic figure known as the Overdog, who serves as the movie's primary villain.
Some of the criticisms of the film have been centered on the movie's dialogue, which seems to be a bit too over-the-top at times. Additionally, some have criticized the special effects, which feel dated in comparison to modern movies.
Despite its flaws, Crime Zone is still a fascinating study of the cyberpunk genre and is well worth watching for fans of the movement. It successfully delivers on its dystopian vision of the future, with dark alleys, flying cars and a cast of characters that are always just one step ahead of the authorities.
Overall, Crime Zone is an entertaining and innovative sci-fi film that remains a cult classic for fans of the genre. While it may not receive as much attention as some of the bigger sci-fi movies of the era, it is a film that deserves to be seen by anyone who loves dystopian science fiction.
Crime Zone is a 1989 science fiction movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.5.
