Creature is a horror movie released in 2011 directed by Fred Andrews. The movie revolves around a group of friends who venture into a Louisiana swamp, secluded from civilization, for a fun-filled weekend. However, they soon realize that they are not alone in the swamp as an ancient creature lurking within the waters is thirsty for blood.
The movie starts with some shots of Louisiana swamps, with the camera focusing on the dense foliage in the area. We then see a group of tourists on a boat, where one of them jumps into the water for a swim. The man is dragged under the surface, and we hear his screams before the camera fades to the title of the movie.
The following scene introduces the main characters of the movie - Beth (Serinda Swan), Niles (Mehcad Brooks), Emily (Amanda Fuller), Oscar (Dillon Casey), Randy (Aaron Hill), Karen (Lauren Schneider), and Tracy (Cynthia Murell). They're a group of friends ready to party and have a good time after a tough week. To celebrate, they decide to rent a dilapidated houseboat and head into the bayous for a fun weekend.
The group arrives at the boat rental and meets the employee, Chopper (Sid Haig), who seems to know the area like the back of his hand. Chopper not only organizes the boat trip, but he also warns the group that the swamp is dangerous and advises them to avoid going too deep into it. The group laughs off Chopper's warning, thinking it's just a scare tactic to convince them to hire a tour guide for an additional fee.
As the night sets in, the group arrives at their destination, ready to party. However, it's not long before they realize that they're in danger. The group starts hearing strange noises outside the boat, and soon enough, they encounter the creature face to face.
The group tries to fight off the creature, but to no avail. The creature is strong and seems to have an unquenchable thirst for blood. In their attempt to flee for their lives, the group realizes that they have landed right in the middle of the creature's hunting ground, and they're not the first to be caught in its trap.
With the creature closing in, the group separates and heads in different directions, hoping to find a way out of the swamp. Oscar and Tracy find a cabin inhabited by a strange old woman who claims to know the origin of the creature. Meanwhile, Beth and Niles try to make their way back to civilization, but the creature is hot on their tail.
Throughout the movie, there are flashbacks that offer explanations to the creature's backstory, which dates back to slavery times in the area. Soon enough, the group realizes that they have awoken a creature that has been dormant for centuries, and now it's back for vengeance.
Creature boasts of an impressive cast of Mehcad Brooks, Serinda Swan, and Daniel Bernhardt, who deliver decent performances in the movie. The direction by Fred Andrews is spot on, with some exciting jump scares that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The special effects and makeup are commendable, and the swampy atmosphere adds to the eeriness of the movie.
However, the movie does get predictable and falls into the usual horror movie tropes, with some cheesy lines and character choices that make it somewhat predictable. Nonetheless, it's still an enjoyable horror movie that offers a good scare to the audience.
In conclusion, Creature is an average horror movie that offers some enticing scares and notable performances. The movie may not break any new ground in the horror genre, but it's still worth the watch, especially for fans of creature features.
