Confessions of a Window Cleaner is a classic British comedy film from 1974 that centers around the misadventures of a young window cleaner named Timothy Lea, played by Robin Askwith, in late 1960s London. The film is based on the popular series of Confessions novels by Timothy Lea's anonymous alter ego, Timothy Lea. The movie is a coming-of-age story that follows the awkward, inexperienced Timothy as he navigates his way through a series of sexual escapades, all while attempting to maintain his job as a window cleaner. Timothy is mostly occupied with trying to satisfy his insatiable sexual desires, but he also has some aspirations to become an author.
Along the way, Timothy encounters a variety of eccentric characters, including his overweight landlady Mrs. Hargreaves, played by Sheila White, and her husband, played by Anthony Booth, who begrudgingly allows Timothy to court his daughter.
Fueled by his teenage hormones and encouraged by his lecherous, middle-aged boss, Mr. Sutton, Timothy finds himself in a series of sexual encounters with his clients. He also becomes entangled in a blackmail scheme when he witnesses the illicit activities of a client he is cleaning windows for.
But despite his many lapses in judgment, Timothy remains a likable character throughout the movie. He is endearingly naive and fumblingly awkward, and he manages to charm both the women he tries to seduce and the viewers watching him stumble through life.
As the title suggests, the movie is full of innuendos and tongue-in-cheek humor, which was typical for the Confessions genre. However, the film also manages to poke fun at the sexual conservatism of the era, and the hypocrisies and double standards surrounding sex and gender roles.
The film was a surprise success upon its release and spawned a series of sequels. It has since become a cult classic and an emblematic representation of British '70s sex comedies.
Confessions of a Window Cleaner is a 1974 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.7.
