Coffee & Cabbage is a 2017 independent comedy-drama film that has been directed by Bryan Reisberg. The film revolves around a 20-something year old girl, Leigh, who is struggling to find her footing in life. As a result of this, she moves into her grandmother, Mrs. Lenore's, house without telling her parents. Leigh's grandmother is an eccentric and free-spirited woman who is always up to something. She is constantly convinced that she is dying and throwing out all her worldly possessions so that she does not have to worry about them when she's gone.
When Leigh moves in, she finds that her grandmother is obsessed with cabbage and every meal that she prepares has some form of cabbage in it. Leigh, who is not fond of the vegetable, begins to get tired of it all and starts to secretly throw the cabbage out.
The film follows Leigh as she tries to figure out her life while dealing with her grandmother's eccentricities, including her obsession with cabbage. Along the way, she meets a guy named Danny who introduces her to the world of coffee, and the two form a connection.
One of the main themes of the film is the relationship between Leigh and her grandmother. Despite being a little out of touch with reality, Mrs. Lenore proves to be a source of guidance and support for her granddaughter when she needs it the most. It is interesting to see how their relationship evolves over the course of the film, with Leigh going from being frustrated with her grandmother to learning from her.
Another important theme in the movie is self-discovery. Leigh is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life, and it is through her experiences with her grandmother and Danny that she begins to develop a clearer picture. The film asks the question of what it really means to be happy and successful in life, and shows that sometimes the answer is not as straightforward as we would like it to be.
The acting in the film is exceptional, with Jenae Altschwager giving a nuanced and authentic performance as Leigh. Robert L. Wilson is also excellent as Mrs. Lenore, perfectly capturing the character's eccentricities and personality. Samantha Rose Baldwin is charming as Danny, and the chemistry between her and Altschwager is palpable.
The direction by Bryan Reisberg is also worth mentioning. He manages to capture the essence of the story and the characters perfectly, creating a film that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. The cinematography is beautiful, with the film making great use of the locations it was shot in.
Overall, Coffee & Cabbage is a charming and heartwarming film that is definitely worth watching. It is a film that explores important themes while never losing sight of its quirky charm. It is a great reminder that sometimes the most important things in life are the relationships that we have with the people around us.
Coffee & Cabbage is a 2019 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 18 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 8.0.
