Clover is a 2020 American crime-comedy film written and directed by Jon Abrahams. The film stars Mark Webber as Mickey, a hapless drug dealer who owes $10,000 to a local crime boss. In a desperate attempt to pay off his debt, Mickey hatches a plan to rob his own mother's jewelry store. However, things quickly spiral out of control as Mickey and his inexperienced crew find themselves in over their heads. Alongside Mickey are his girlfriend Angie (played by Nicole Elizabeth Berger), his childhood best friend Jasper (played by Abrahams), and Jasper's girlfriend Clover (played by Erika Christensen).
The film takes place over the course of one long, chaotic night as the crew bounces between various locations, trying to stay one step ahead of the police and the crime boss who's hot on their trail. As they make their way through the city, the group encounters a diverse cast of wacky characters, including a Russian mobster, a kooky fortune teller, and a cantankerous old man with a shotgun.
While the film's premise may sound like a straightforward crime caper, what sets Clover apart is its quirky sense of humor and offbeat characters. The film is essentially a buddy comedy at heart, with Mickey and Jasper's friendship serving as the emotional core of the story. Webber and Abrahams have a natural chemistry that makes their scenes together some of the film's funniest and most heartfelt.
Berger and Christensen also shine as the film's resident femme fatales, who are both tougher than they initially appear. In particular, Christensen's Clover steals many scenes with her deadpan delivery and matter-of-fact attitude.
While the film's humor may not be for everyone, those who enjoy dark comedies will likely find a lot to love in Clover. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments throughout the film, although some of the jokes may be too crass or absurd for certain viewers.
Beyond the humor, the film also features some impressive stylistic choices. Abrahams incorporates a variety of visual techniques to give the film a distinct look and feel, including split screens, slow-motion sequences, and Dutch angles. The cinematography by Tom Walker is also noteworthy, capturing the vibrant energy of New York City's nightlife.
Overall, Clover is a fun, irreverent crime comedy that offers plenty of laughs and memorable characters. While it may not break any new cinematic ground, it's a solid entry into the genre that's sure to delight fans of films like Pulp Fiction and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Clover is a 2020 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 41 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.6 and a MetaScore of 43.
