Maria Enders is a veteran actress whose career was launched after being cast as the younger of two women in a play by Wilhelm Melchior, and subsequently starring in the film adaptation. On her way to an awards show two decades later she receives news that Melchior has committed suicide after struggling with a terminal illness. While still processing her feelings over his death she is approached by a director with an offer to star in a revival of the play that launched her career, except this time she will be playing the part of the older woman instead.
