Close Calls is a horror film from 2017 directed by Richard Stringham. The movie concerns a teenage girl named Morgan who spends a few days home alone while her father is away on business. Her grandfather is suffering from dementia and is confined to a wheelchair, and her father has hired a nurse to take care of him. Meanwhile, Morgan is struggling with drug addiction and starting to see strange things around the house.

The film opens with a flashback to the 60s, where we see a young woman being tied up and whipped by a group of men wearing masks. We then jump forward to the present day and are introduced to Morgan, played by Jordan Phipps. We learn that Morgan's mother died when she was young, and that she has been struggling ever since. Her father, played by Greg Fallon, is a workaholic and is rarely home. Morgan spends most of her time smoking weed, taking pills, and hanging out with her friend Jason.

On the first night that Morgan is home alone, she gets a strange phone call from a man who asks her a series of bizarre questions. She is unnerved by the call but assumes it was just a wrong number. She then starts to see strange, ghostly apparitions around the house, but isn't sure if they're real or just hallucinations.

Things come to a head when Morgan's drug dealer, played by Carmen Patterson, shows up at the house. Morgan owes her a lot of money, and she's not leaving until she gets paid. The situation soon spirals out of control, and Morgan's already fragile mental state becomes even more precarious.

Close Calls is a slow-burn horror movie that takes its time building tension and atmosphere. There are plenty of jump scares and creepy images, but the real horror comes from the sense of impending doom that permeates the film. Jordan Phipps gives a strong performance as Morgan, bringing depth and nuance to a character who could easily have been one-dimensional. Greg Fallon is also impressive as Morgan's distant father, who is struggling to connect with his troubled daughter.

One of the key themes of the movie is the way that trauma can be passed down through generations. We see this in the flashback to the 60s, where the woman being tortured is shown to be the mother of one of the men wearing a mask. We also see this in Morgan's own story, where the death of her mother has clearly had a profound impact on her life.

There are parts of Close Calls that don't quite work. The subplot involving the nurse and Morgan's grandfather feels underdeveloped and tacked on, and some of the scares feel a bit too predictable. However, the film's strong performances and overall sense of dread make up for these shortcomings.

Overall, Close Calls is a solid horror movie that will likely appeal to fans of slow-burn psychological horror. It's not a groundbreaking film by any means, but it's well-made and expertly paced. If you're looking for a creepy, unsettling movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, it's definitely worth a watch.

Close Calls is a 2017 horror movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 9 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.5.
