Classmates is a 2006 Indian Malayalam-language thriller film directed by Lal Jose and written by James Albert. The film features an ensemble cast of Prithviraj Sukumaran, Indrajith Sukumaran, Jayasurya, Narain, Kavya Madhavan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Balachandra Menon and Radhika. Set in 1991, the plot revolves around the reunion of a group of classmates after a period of 15 years.
The film starts with an elderly college professor named Professor Iyer (played by Balachandra Menon) walking around the campus of Maharajas Arts and Science college, where he taught economics 15 years ago. The college has undergone many changes since then. While reminiscing about the past, he remembers a group of five students, Pius (Narain), Gautham (Prithviraj Sukumaran), Thara Kalyan (Kavya Madhavan), Satheesan (Indrajith Sukumaran) and Miriam (Remya Nambeesan), who were close friends back then.
The story then shifts to the present day, where the five friends are shown to have moved on with their respective lives. Pius is now a successful businessman, Gautham is an IPS officer, Thara Kalyan is a doctor, Satheesan is a farmer and Miriam is a musician. Professor Iyer invites the friends for a college reunion and they all agree to come.
As they start arriving one by one, they start to relive their memories of the past. However, it becomes apparent that the group still bears a grudge from 15 years ago. During their college days, the then-college union chairman, Raziya (played by Radhika), was mysteriously murdered, and the five friends had suspected each other of being the culprit. The incident also led to a rift in their friendship, which persists to this day.
During the reunion, they discover that Raziya's murder case was reopened by the police and her supposed killer, Varghese (played by Jayasurya), who had committed suicide after being the prime suspect, might not have been the real killer. The friends start to investigate and soon start to discover more about the case and each other's secrets. As the past catches up with them, their friendship starts to fall apart again.
The film is a gripping thriller that keeps the audience on their toes till the end. The director has managed to create a good mix of suspense, drama and emotions. The cinematography is also well done, capturing the beauty of the Kerala landscape.
The film's highlight is definitely the performances by the ensemble cast. Prithviraj Sukumaran and Indrajith Sukumaran stand out with their intense performances. Kavya Madhavan also delivers a strong performance as the only female member of the group. Jayasurya and Balachandra Menon also provide notable performances.
The music by Alex Paul is also a highlight of the film. The songs are melodious and blend well with the story. The background score is subtle yet effective in creating the right mood.
In conclusion, Classmates is a must-watch film for anyone who loves thrillers. It has all the elements of a good suspense drama and is well executed by the director and the cast. It is a testament to the fact that Malayalam cinema can create films of international standards.
