Circle of Eight is a supernatural thriller movie from 2009 that revolves around Jessica, a young woman who moves to Los Angeles to start a new life. She rents an apartment in a striking art deco building known as the Blackburn, and soon she becomes fascinated by its mysterious past. In the Blackburn, Jessica meets a group of eclectic tenants who live on the eighth floor, the Circle of Eight. They include Tim, a shy and naive guy who is always trying to impress Jessica; Sara, a friendly and outgoing painter who invites Jessica to join her art class; and George, an eccentric writer who is working on a novel about the Blackburn's dark history.
As Jessica begins to explore the building's secrets, strange things start to happen. She has vivid nightmares and hallucinations, and she feels like she is being watched. Moreover, she learns that several young women have disappeared from the Blackburn in the past, and nobody knows what happened to them.
Jessica tries to unravel the mystery, but her investigation leads her to a dark and dangerous path. She discovers that the Blackburn is a portal to a malevolent supernatural world, and that the Circle of Eight has been unwittingly awakening its ancient powers. Now, Jessica must confront a demonic force that threatens to consume her and everyone she cares about.
The movie features a talented cast, including John Bishop as Jessica, Kirk Bovill as George, and Ryan Doom as Tim. They deliver solid performances that convey the characters' quirks and fears, and they create a tense and eerie atmosphere that keeps the audience on edge.
The direction by Stephen C. Miller is skillful and stylish, with a keen eye for detail and mood. He uses the Blackburn's architecture and decor to enhance the film's gothic and retro vibes, and he balances the slow-burn suspense with bursts of terror and gore. The movie also benefits from a haunting score by Ryan Dodson, which amplifies the eerie ambiance and ramps up the suspense.
Circle of Eight is not a flawless movie, though. Some of the plot twists and scares may feel contrived or predictable, and some of the secondary characters are underdeveloped and offer little to the story. Moreover, the movie could have benefited from more backstory and mythology to explain the supernatural elements and their implications.
Nevertheless, Circle of Eight is a solid and entertaining horror movie that delivers plenty of thrills and chills. It's an atmospheric and engaging tale of a young woman's journey into darkness, and it offers enough twists and turns to keep the audience guessing until the end. If you're a fan of supernatural thrillers with a touch of mystery and terror, give Circle of Eight a spin.
Circle of Eight is a 2009 mystery with a runtime of 1 hour and 23 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.7.
