Former heavy weight contender James was forced to give up boxing after breaking his hand during a match. His wife both relieved and saddened by him giving up his profession and only source of income no longer has to watch the violence of boxing. As the great depression swarms over the united states James is forced to do hard labor despite breaking his hand in order to keep providing for his family. Though he does what he can he can not get jobs everyday like he would like to.

James receives an offer from his friend and boxing manager to fill in for a boxing match against the number two contender in the world to earn some extra money after a cancellation.

James stuns the experts when he delivers a third-ring knockout against his opponent. While his hand was broken he was able to improve his abilities in the ring by working on the opposite hand and decides against his wife's wishes to return to boxing.

For a while James's wife is resentful from his manager profiting off of him but she changes her mind when she realizes that their family too had been affected by the hard times.

With some his winnings he pays back what he had received from the government during his unemployment and sees the heavy weight championship in his near future as he continues to win his matches. His story of going from poor to wealthy hits the newspapers and is used as a sign of hope for others struggling during the depression.

When his match for the championship comes both James and his manager are forced to watch a video of the opponent in action so he can say later that he warned them. James's opponent has been known to actually kill two men while in the ring causing his wife to be extremely nervous.

James defeats his opponent and becomes the world heavy weight champion and uses his winnings to buy a house where he and his wife lived for the rest of their lives.
