Chatty Catties is an independent dark comedy film released in 2015, directed and written by Pablo Valencia. It features Megan Hensley as the voice of Zoe, a socially-awkward cat who was implanted with a device that lets her speak English, and her owners Paul (John Autry II) and Ally (Matthew Grathwol). The movie takes place in Seattle and starts with Paul and Ally, a couple struggling to keep their marriage together, attending a therapy session with their cat Zoe. They are the only couple in the group that has a pet, and Zoe's ability to talk puts a strain on the group's dynamic. As Zoe struggles with the concept of free will and individuality, she becomes more assertive and starts to cause trouble for her owners. In the meantime, Paul and Ally's marriage problems escalate, and they seek help from their therapist, Dr. Rimbaud (Ally Iseman).
Throughout the film, Zoe's dialogue is a mix of cat-like meows and human speech, adding to the quirkiness of the storyline. Zoe's conversations with other cats, some of whom are voiced by real Seattle-based comedians, provide commentary on human behavior from a feline perspective. The film also features a number of supporting characters, such as the overbearing neighbor (played by Michael Aaron Milligan), who frequently interrupts Paul and Ally's intimate moments, and Paul's work colleague (Katie Michels), who has an awkward crush on him.
As the story progresses, the audience witnesses the characters' problems intensify. Paul and Ally's issues become more apparent as they divulge their secrets to Dr. Rimbaud. Their problems include Paul's infidelity which he had thought was just a game because his partner was a mannequin, and Ally's drinking problem which she keeps denying. Meanwhile, Zoe's curiosity and desire for autonomy reaches a climax as she ventures out of the house and meets other cats. After being exposed to the seedy underbelly of the feline world, Zoe gains a newfound sense of purpose and starts to question her relationship with Paul and Ally.
In this film, Valencia has managed to create an incredibly unique and quirky universe, which is unlikely to be found anywhere else. The cinematography is straightforward and basic, but this is most probably an intentional move so that the audience is solely focused on the events taking place within the story. The script is incredibly witty, and the use of Zoe's voice as a comedic device to highlight human nature from an outsider's perspective is very effective.
Chatty Catties is a captivating, entertaining, and incredibly well-written film that will appeal to viewers who enjoy off-beat indie comedies. With its eccentric characters, bizarre storyline, and excellent production, it's hard not to see why the film has become such a cult classic.
