In the movie Chances Are, a young couple, Corinne Jeffries (played by Cybill Shepherd) and Louie Jeffries (played by Christopher McDonald) are in love and planning to get married. However, Louie is killed in a car accident before they can tie the knot. He is reincarnated as Alex Finch (played by Robert Downey Jr.). Twenty-three years after Louie's death, Alex meets Corinne's daughter Miranda (played by Mary Stuart Masterson), who is starting her first year at college. Alex has a strong feeling of déjà vu when he meets Miranda, but he is not sure why. He begins to investigate his past and, with the help of his friend Phillip Train (played by Ryan O'Neal), he discovers that he is the reincarnation of Louie Jeffries.

Alex realizes that if he truly is Louie, then Corinne must be his true love. He tries to reconnect with Corinne, but she is now a successful lawyer and no longer believes in reincarnation. She is also engaged to a wealthy businessman. Alex, however, is persistent and continues to pursue Corinne. Phillip advises him to be careful and not to reveal his true identity too soon.

As Alex gets closer to Corinne, Miranda shares with him a letter that Louie wrote to her on the day he died, expressing his love for Corinne and his desire to spend the rest of his life with her. This letter is what sparks Corinne's memory of Louie and she begins to believe that Alex really is her reincarnated lover.
