Cassadaga is a horror movie that follows the story of Lily Morel (Kelen Coleman), a deaf art teacher who moves from Atlanta to Cassadaga, Florida, to start a new life after the death of her younger sister. Lily is haunted by the memories of her sister's death and longs to find a way to communicate with her spirit. Lily's new home in Cassadaga is an unusual place, known for its spiritualist community and its history of dark secrets. She quickly becomes fascinated with the town's spiritualist society and, in particular, with a young psychic named Mike (Kevin Alejandro). Mike is a sympathetic character who seems to understand Lily's yearning to communicate with the dead.
As Lily becomes more involved in the spiritualist community, she takes part in a séance in which she receives a message from a young blind girl named Ana (Avis-Marie Barnes). Ana's message is cryptic, but Lily is soon drawn into a mystery involving Ana's family, which leads her to uncover some unsettling truths about the town's past.
Despite being met with skepticism and doubt from those around her, Lily persists in her quest to uncover the truth about Ana's family and what happened to them. In doing so, she becomes caught up in a terrifying game of cat and mouse with a serial killer who has been preying on vulnerable young women in the town for years.
The movie is not just a horror flick but explores some darker themes such as grief and struggling with a disability. Kelen Coleman's performance as the grieving sister who is determined to find answers is incredibly moving and convincing. Kevin Alejandro, known for his roles in True Blood and Lucifer, also delivers a strong performance as the kind and empathetic Mike.
The movie does an excellent job of building suspense and tension, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats as Lily uncovers more and more disturbing secrets about the town. The cinematography is also very effective, with the eerie setting of Cassadaga creating an unsettling atmosphere throughout the movie.
Overall, despite not being a box office hit, Cassadaga is a well-crafted horror movie that delivers scares as well as an intriguing mystery. The strong performances from the cast and the excellent pacing make it a worthwhile watch for anyone interested in the horror genre.
