Candy Stripers is a 2006 horror film that centers on a group of teenage hospital volunteers who become unwitting hosts to a group of alien parasites. The film stars Brian Lloyd, Tori White, and Deanna Brooks, and explores themes of body horror, sexuality, and contagion. The film opens with a group of high-school students preparing for their summer jobs as candy stripers at a local hospital. Among the group is Katie (Deanna Brooks), a seductive young woman who is immediately drawn to one of the male volunteers, a shy and sensitive boy named Dean (Brian Lloyd). As the group begins work at the hospital, strange things begin to happen. Patients start to exhibit bizarre symptoms, and the teenagers begin to experience terrifying visions and vivid hallucinations.
As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that the hospital has been infiltrated by a group of parasitic aliens who use human hosts to reproduce and spread their infection. The candy stripers unwittingly come into contact with one of the aliens, and soon find themselves under its control. The creature is able to enter their bodies through sexual contact, and the teens quickly become addicted to its pleasure-inducing effects. But as the parasite grows and multiplies inside their bodies, the teens begin to experience increasingly horrific side effects.
Brian Lloyd gives a strong performance as Dean, the film's protagonist. A loner and outcast, Dean is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality and his growing feelings for Katie. Lloyd imbues the character with a vulnerability and sensitivity that makes his eventual transformation all the more harrowing to watch.
Deanna Brooks is similarly impressive as Katie, the film's femme fatale. Sexy and manipulative, Katie uses her charm and sexuality to get what she wants. But as the alien parasite takes over her body, she becomes increasingly psychotic and dangerous. Brooks brings a real sense of danger and menace to the role, and is one of the film's real highlights.
The film is not without its flaws, however. At times the pacing can feel a little slow, and the script occasionally descends into cliché. Some of the gore effects are also a little underwhelming, although there are a few standout set pieces that will satisfy fans of the genre.
Overall, however, Candy Stripers is an engaging and entertaining horror movie that will appeal to fans of classic '80s body horror films like The Thing and The Fly. While it may not be the most original film to come out of the genre, it is well-executed and features some strong performances from its young cast. For horror fans looking for a campy and fun thrill ride, Candy Stripers is definitely worth checking out.
Candy Stripers is a 2006 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 29 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.3.
