Cadillac Man is a 1990 American comedy film directed by Roger Donaldson and starring Robin Williams, Tim Robbins, and Pamela Reed. The movie is set in New York City and centers around Joey O'Brien, played by Robin Williams, an impulsive car salesman who is trying to keep his job at a failing dealership. Joey O'Brien is a salesman at the dealership, and he's something of an outlier in the cutthroat world of car sales. Unlike his more ruthless colleagues, Joey is a soft-hearted guy who genuinely cares about the people he sells cars to. He's also a bit of a mess. He's got a string of ex-wives, a daughter who's about to get married, and a gambling problem that's gotten him in trouble with some dangerous people.
Things go from bad to worse for Joey when a group of gunmen take over the dealership and hold him and his coworkers hostage. Among them is Larry, played by Tim Robbins, a desperate man who has come to the dealership to buy a car for his wife in an effort to save his marriage. As the situation unfolds, Joey finds himself trying to negotiate with the gunman while also trying to keep the peace among his coworkers.
The tension in the movie is high as the situation at the dealership escalates. The gunmen are unpredictable, and Joey's attempts to negotiate with them frequently backfire. Meanwhile, Joey's coworkers are trying to figure out how to get out of the situation alive, and tensions between them begin to rise. Amidst the chaos, Joey finds himself torn between his desire to protect the people around him and his own instinct for self-preservation.
Throughout Cadillac Man, Robin Williams delivers a brilliant performance as Joey O'Brien. Williams is a master of the comedic and dramatic arts, and he brings both to bear in this role. There are moments of genuine tension and fear in the movie, but there are also plenty of laughs to be had. Williams is a virtuoso, delivering line after line of witty dialogue and playing off his co-stars with finesse.
Tim Robbins is also excellent in his role as Larry. Robbins has a knack for playing characters who are in over their heads, and his performance in Cadillac Man is no exception. Larry is a man who is desperately trying to save his marriage, but he's also a man who has made some very bad choices. Robbins plays the character with a perfect mix of desperation and humor, and his chemistry with Williams is a highlight of the movie.
Pamela Reed rounds out the cast with her performance as Lila, Joey's long-suffering ex-wife. Reed is an actor with incredible range, and she brings a depth and complexity to the character of Lila that adds a layer of depth to the movie. Lila is at once tough and vulnerable, and Reed nails every aspect of the character.
Overall, Cadillac Man is an excellent movie that stands up well over time. It's a classic example of Robin Williams' comedic genius, but it's also a movie with a lot of heart. The tension in the movie is high, but there are plenty of moments of humor and humanity to balance it out. If you're a fan of Robin Williams or Tim Robbins, or if you just like a good comedy with a bit of edge, then Cadillac Man is definitely worth checking out.
