Byomkesh Bakshi is a 2010 Bengali language crime thriller film based on the famous fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi created by Saradindu Bandopadhyay. Directed by Anjan Dutta, the film stars Abir Chatterjee as Byomkesh Bakshi, Saswata Chatterjee as his sidekick Ajit Kumar Banerjee, and Arindol Bagchi as the villainous collaborator with Japanese World War II fascists.

The film is set in the backdrop of Kolkata during the late 1940s, just after India's independence from British rule. Byomkesh Bakshi, a brilliant young man with a keen sense of observation and deduction, is approached by a wealthy businessman named Bhuvan Singha to look into the case of his missing son. Byomkesh and Ajit begin their investigation and discover a sinister plot involving a Japanese spy posing as a wealthy industrialist, who is using Singha's factory as a front for espionage.

As the investigation progresses, new clues keep popping up, leading Byomkesh and Ajit to the brink of unraveling the conspiracy. But at every step, they are thwarted by the cunning and ruthless villain who seems to be always one step ahead of them. Along the way, Byomkesh also has to deal with his personal demons, including his old flame Satyabati, who still has feelings for him despite his indifference.

The film's plot is complex and full of twists and turns, with the story unfolding in a non-linear fashion through flashbacks and flash-forwards. The dialogue is sharp and witty, and the characters are well-etched and believable. Abir Chatterjee delivers a nuanced and understated performance as Byomkesh Bakshi, capturing the character's intelligence, humor, and vulnerability. Saswata Chatterjee is equally impressive as Ajit, providing a perfect foil to Byomkesh's sharp mind with his bumbling yet endearing personality.

The film's technical aspects are also top-notch, with the period production design and costumes adding to the film's authenticity. The music by Neel Dutt is atmospheric and helps in building the tension in the film's many suspenseful sequences.

Overall, Byomkesh Bakshi is a must-watch for fans of crime thrillers, detective stories, and period dramas. The film is a faithful adaptation of Saradindu Bandopadhyay's beloved character, and Anjan Dutta has done an excellent job in bringing the character to life on the big screen. With its gripping plot, well-realized characters, and top-notch performances, Byomkesh Bakshi is one of the best crime thrillers to come out of Bengali cinema in recent years.
