In the 2016 movie Brother Nature, Taran Killam stars as Roger, a straight-laced politician who is set to marry his boss's daughter in a few weeks' time. Hoping to impress his soon-to-be father-in-law, Roger decides to take a trip to the countryside with his girlfriend (Gillian Jacobs) to meet her family. However, things quickly go awry when Roger clashes with his girlfriend's obnoxious brother, Todd (Bobby Moynihan), who is determined to make his stay as uncomfortable as possible.
Brother Nature is a comedy that takes a look at family dynamics, sibling rivalry, and the dangers of trying to impress the in-laws. The film is directed by Matt Villines and Oz Rodriguez, who have worked together on various comedy projects such as Saturday Night Live and Documentary Now!. The movie was written by Taran Killam and his writing partner Mikey Day, who also stars in the movie as Todd's friend Zane.
At the beginning of the movie, Roger seems like the perfect future son-in-law. He's handsome, successful, and polite. He even offers to help out around his girlfriend's family's cabin, much to the surprise of Todd and his friends. However, Todd, who is loud, crass, and unapologetic, makes it clear that he doesn't think much of Roger's uptightness. The rest of the family members are equally strange - there's Grandpa, who's obsessed with guns, and the overbearing Aunt Pam, who makes inappropriate comments at every turn.
As the weekend progresses, Roger's attempts to impress his girlfriend's family only lead to more awkward and hilarious situations. He tries to go hunting with Todd and the others, but ends up shooting himself in the foot (literally). He tries to cook dinner for everyone, but ends up setting the kitchen on fire. And he tries to keep the peace with Todd, but ends up getting into a fight with him over a girl.
Despite all the chaos, there are still moments of genuine warmth and bonding between the characters. Roger starts to loosen up and have fun with Todd and his friends. He also begins to see the appeal of the laid-back countryside lifestyle, and even impresses the family with his skills in a rowboat race. Meanwhile, Todd starts to show a more vulnerable side, confessing to Roger that he feels trapped in his small town and is jealous of Roger's successful career.
Overall, Brother Nature is a lighthearted comedy that provides plenty of laughs and some heartfelt moments. Taran Killam, Gillian Jacobs, and Bobby Moynihan all give strong performances as the three leads, and the supporting cast of eccentric family members and friends adds to the film's humor. Although the plotline of a city slicker trying to fit in with a rural family isn't particularly groundbreaking, the movie's witty dialogue, physical comedy, and charming characters make it an enjoyable watch.
Brother Nature is a 2016 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 36 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.8 and a MetaScore of 53.
