In the movie Broken City, Mark Wahlberg plays Billy Taggart, a former NYPD detective who has been embroiled in a scandal that resulted in his dismissal from the force. He is now a private investigator who is struggling to make ends meet. He is approached by the Mayor of New York City, Nicholas Hostetler, played by Russell Crowe, who hires him to investigate his wife, Cathleen Hostetler, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Mayor Hostetler is in the midst of a tough reelection campaign and needs Taggart to find evidence that his wife is having an affair. Taggart agrees to take the case, but as he delves deeper into the investigation, he discovers a web of corruption that involves not just the Mayor, but also the Police Commissioner, the District Attorney, and other powerful people in the city.

As Taggart uncovers more and more evidence, he realizes that there is far more at stake than just an extramarital affair. The corruption goes deeper than he originally thought, and the people involved are willing to do whatever it takes to keep their secrets hidden.

Throughout the movie, we see flashbacks of Taggart's past and the incident that caused him to leave the police force. These flashbacks give us insight into Taggart's character, and we see how his past has shaped him into the person he is now.

The performances in Broken City are top-notch, with Wahlberg and Crowe both delivering strong performances. The chemistry between these two actors is palpable, and it's clear that they both relished the chance to play such complex and morally ambiguous characters.

Zeta-Jones also shines as Cathleen Hostetler, the Mayor's wife. She brings a sense of vulnerability to the role, and we can see that she is a woman who is struggling to keep up with the demands of her powerful husband.

The cinematography in Broken City is also noteworthy, with the film's dark and moody tones perfectly capturing the gritty atmosphere of New York City. The city itself becomes a character in the film, with its seedy underbelly and corrupt power structures.

The plot of Broken City is engaging and suspenseful, with plenty of twists and turns to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The film's themes of corruption and power resonate strongly, and the story feels all too relevant in today's world.

Overall, Broken City is a well-crafted thriller that delivers on all fronts. It's a movie that will keep you guessing until the very end, and is definitely worth a watch for fans of crime dramas.

Broken City is a 2013 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1 and a MetaScore of 49.
