Breakdown stars Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan. The action thriller is about Jeff and Amy, a Massachusetts couple who are driving to California. They have car trouble in an isolated area of the desert. A trucker named Red Barr (J. T. Walsh) stops and offers to drive them to a nearby diner to get help. Jeff remains with the car while Amy goes with the trucker, but he becomes concerned when he finds that the car has been tampered with, and when his wife does not return after an hour or so, he begins searching for her. After questioning the people at the diner and the trucker, he finds that Amy has been kidnapped.
