Boxing Helena is a psychological thriller movie from 1993 that takes place in Los Angeles. The movie starts off by introducing us to Nick Cavanaugh, played by Julian Sands, a surgeon who is obsessed with a woman named Helena, played by Sherilyn Fenn. Nick has tried to pursue Helena romantically, but to no avail. Helena sees Nick as just a friend and nothing more.
One night, Helena gets into a car accident outside Nick's house, and Nick, being the surgeon that he is, decides to operate on her without her consent. During the surgery, things take a wrong turn, and Nick ends up amputating both of Helena's legs below the knee. Helena sues Nick for malpractice, and he ends up losing his career and everything he had worked for.
After a while of not seeing each other, Nick and Helena cross paths again, and Nick invites her to a party he is hosting. Helena reluctantly agrees to go, and at the party, Nick drugs her and takes her back to his house. He then proceeds to amputate her arms and legs, keeping her captive in his home.
As the story progresses, Nick's obsession with Helena increases, and he becomes more and more delusional. He starts to believe that Helena is in love with him and that she will never leave him. Nick's nurse, Anne Garrett, played by Bill Paxton, becomes suspicious of Nick's behavior and starts to investigate.
Without giving away any spoilers, the movie takes a very dark turn, and the audience is taken on a wild ride of twists and turns. It is a disturbing movie that makes the audience uncomfortable but keeps them engaged throughout the entirety of the film.
The acting in the movie is superb, with Julian Sands giving a captivating yet chilling portrayal of Nick Cavanaugh. Sherilyn Fenn also does an excellent job portraying a woman who is trapped and ultimately learns to use her mind to defeat her captor. Bill Paxton's portrayal of Anne Garrett, the nurse who becomes suspicious of Nick's actions, is also notable.
Overall, Boxing Helena is an unsettling yet thought-provoking psychological thriller that explores the depths of obsession and delusion. It may not be a movie for everyone, but those who enjoy a good thriller will appreciate the captivating storyline and excellent acting. It is a haunting film that will stay with the viewer long after the credits.
