Bonneville is a heart-warming dramedy that follows the story of three women on a journey to find themselves while discovering the beauty and freedom of the open road. The film stars award-winning actresses Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Joan Allen in the lead roles. The film opens with Arvilla, played by Jessica Lange, mourning the passing of her husband, Joe. Before he died, Joe left specific instructions for Arvilla to scatter his ashes in his beloved Bonneville convertible, in the Utah desert. Arvilla is devastated at the thought of letting go of her husband’s ashes, but feels that it’s her duty to respect his last wishes.

Arvilla’s best friends, Margene and Carol, played by Joan Allen and Kathy Bates respectively, accompany her on this journey. The trio sets out on a road trip from Pocatello, Idaho to Santa Barbara, California, with the ashes in tow. The road trip is a chance for the women to reconnect with one another and reflect on their lives.

As they hit the road, they encounter a series of unexpected events that test their friendship and resolve. The women face everything from car trouble to unscrupulous motel owners, along with some personal challenges that arise along the way. All three women must learn to trust each other and themselves, as they face the obstacles inherent in their journey.

Along the way, they meet a few interesting characters. One of them is a motorcycle-riding truck driver named Bo, played by Tom Skerritt, who offers the women a helping hand when they need it most. The women are also joined by Arvilla’s estranged, grown-up step-daughter, Francine, played by Christine Baranski. Francine is a successful businesswoman who has her own version of what Joe would have wanted for his final resting place.

Bonneville is notable for its strong female leads, who showcase the humor, strength, and vulnerability of women at different stages of life. Joan Allen is especially luminous as Margene, a gentle, faithful friend, while Kathy Bates brings her trademark wit and sass to the role of Carol, a wild and free-spirited friend. Jessica Lange gives a touching performance as Arvilla, a woman who has lost her husband, but not her sense of adventure.

In addition to its stellar cast, Bonneville boasts stunning cinematography that captures the natural beauty of the American West. The film’s visuals truly capture the vastness and majesty of the region, especially as the women travel along highways and deserted roads.

Bonneville is a film that celebrates womanhood and the bonds of friendship. It is a film that reminds us of the value of taking risks and experiencing life to the fullest, no matter what our age. The film’s message is clear: the road may not always be smooth, but the journey is worth taking.

Bonneville is a 2008 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 33 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1 and a MetaScore of 46.
