Bombay Velvet is a Bollywood crime thriller from 2015 directed by Anurag Kashyap. The movie boasts an impressive star cast which includes Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Karan Johar in prominent roles. The movie is set in the Bombay of the ’60s and is essentially the story of a man who dreams big and his subsequent journey that takes him through the dark underbelly of the city.

The movie focuses on Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor), a man with dreams to become a big-shot in the city. Raised in the slums of Bombay, Johnny becomes a street fighter in his youth and eventually sets his eyes on the underworld. He meets a wealthy businessman Kaizad Khambatta (Karan Johar), who is looking for someone to run his club, Bombay Velvet. Kaizad sees the potential in Johnny and hires him as the manager of the club. Around the same time, he meets and falls in love with Rosie Noronha (Anushka Sharma), a jazz singer who is hired to perform at the club.

As Johnny begins to gain power within the club, he realizes that there is much more at stake than he had initially anticipated. The club is just a front for Kaizad’s illegal operations, and Johnny is now a part of this world of corruption and deceit. Things take a turn for the worse when Kaizad gets in trouble with the police and tries to implicate Johnny in his crimes. Soon Johnny is marked as a wanted criminal, with the police hot on his trail.

There are several elements that make this movie interesting. For one, the setting and the period in which the story is set are refreshing. The movie captures the Bombay of the ’60s in all its glory, complete with jazz clubs, vintage cars, and gorgeous costumes. The attention given to the set design and cinematography is remarkable, and it transports the audience back in time.

The story is engaging and keeps the audience hooked throughout. It is a story of ambition and greed, and how one man’s desire to achieve greatness puts him in a situation that is beyond his control. The movie explores the human psyche and how the desire for power can often lead to one’s downfall.

The performances in the film are top-notch, with each of the lead actors delivering powerful performances. Ranbir Kapoor is excellent as the street fighter turned club owner, and he gives a nuanced performance, capturing the essence of his character superbly. Anushka Sharma is equally impressive as the jazz singer, who is trying to make her way in a world of men. Her character has many layers, and Sharma brings them out beautifully. Karan Johar makes his acting debut with this film and gives a surprisingly good performance. He plays the shrewd businessman with finesse and adds an element of surprise to the film.

Additionally, the music in the movie is fantastic. The songs not only capture the essence of the film but are also an ode to the music of the ’60s. Amit Trivedi’s music complements the film perfectly and adds to its overall charm.

However, the movie has its flaws. At times, the pacing is slow, and the editing is choppy, making some scenes feel disjointed. Additionally, some of the characters feel underdeveloped, and there are loose ends that are not tied up at the end of the movie. Nonetheless, these flaws do not take away from the overall experience of the film.

In conclusion, Bombay Velvet is a gripping crime drama that is a must-watch for fans of the genre. The movie takes the audience on a journey through the underbelly of Bombay of the ’60s and explores the themes of power, ambition, and corruption. The performances are brilliant, and the music is fantastic. While the film has its flaws, it is a well-crafted movie that will keep the audience hooked from start to finish.
