Set in 1974 New York, Blood Ties tells the story of two estranged brothers on opposite sides of the law. As Blood Ties begins, we meet Frank (Billy Crudup), a local cop who's worked hard to put his past behind him. With his alcoholic father dead and his ex-con brother Chris (Clive Owen) recently released from prison after taking the rap for a crime they both committed, Frank is determined to stay on the straight and narrow. However, when Chris is pulled back into a life of crime, Frank finds himself drawn back into his brother's world, even as he tries to protect his job, his life, and the woman he loves, his ex-girlfriend Vanessa (Zoe Saldana).

As the story unfolds, Blood Ties explores the complex relationships between siblings and the struggles of trying to move beyond one's past mistakes. Chris is a charismatic criminal, with a quick temper and a violent streak. He's also a loving father to two young girls, and fiercely loyal to his family. However, his past mistakes and intense loyalty to his gang of burglars make it difficult for him to leave his old life behind.

Meanwhile, Frank is a more restrained character, struggling to balance his desire for justice with his loyalty to his family. He's a man trying to move beyond the mistakes of his youth, to make his own way in the world, and to protect the people he cares about. However, his relationship with Chris is fraught with tension and mistrust, as both brothers struggle to come to terms with the past and move forward.

Marion Cotillard plays Monica, Chris's ex-girlfriend and the mother of his children. Though Monica has moved on, she still has strong feelings for Chris, even as she tries to protect her daughters from his criminal activities.

Throughout Blood Ties, we see the characters struggling with competing loyalties and the painful consequences of their past mistakes. The film portrays a gritty and realistic version of 1970s New York, with its seedy underbelly of crime and corruption, as well as its moments of beauty and humanity.

The performances in Blood Ties are excellent, with Clive Owen and Billy Crudup both turning in nuanced and affecting portrayals of two flawed and endearing brothers. Marion Cotillard brings a quiet dignity to her role as Monica, and Zoe Saldana provides a spark of energy and humor as Vanessa.

The cinematography and production design are also noteworthy, with the film capturing the look and feel of 1970s New York with authenticity and style. The score, composed by Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominee Eric Clapton, contributes to the film's brooding and intense atmosphere.

Blood Ties is a tightly-woven crime drama that explores the complex relationships between siblings, the pain of trying to move beyond one's past, and the struggle to make the right choices when faced with difficult circumstances. It's an engaging and well-acted film that's sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Blood Ties is a 2014 thriller with a runtime of 2 hours and 8 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.5 and a MetaScore of 45.
