Blood Glacier is a 2013 horror movie that takes place in the Austrian Alps. The story is set around a group of scientists stationed on a remote research base, one of whom discovers a glacier that appears to be oozing red liquid. The scientists soon realize that the glacier is melting, and that the strange red liquid is actually causing a series of mutations in the local fauna. As the mutations become more and more extreme, the human inhabitants of the base find themselves in a desperate fight for survival.
The movie is directed by Marvin Kren and stars Gerhard Liebmann as Janek, the scientist who first discovers the mutated animals. Edita Malovcic plays Tanja, Janek's ex-girlfriend who also works on the research base. Other notable characters include Viktoria, a government official who comes to investigate the strange occurrences, and the base's resident dog handler, played by Santos.
The movie starts off slow, with a lot of time spent establishing the characters and the setting. The first hints of trouble come when Janek and his team discover a herd of goats that have been mutated into grotesque, slug-like creatures. This sets off a chain reaction of increasingly disturbing mutations, with insects, rodents, and even a bear all falling victim to the strange red liquid.
As the mutant creatures become more dangerous, the humans on the base are forced to band together and try to survive. The tension between the characters is palpable, with old grudges and unresolved romantic tensions simmering just beneath the surface. Viktoria, as the outsider who has come to investigate the situation, adds an extra layer of conflict to the group dynamics.
One of the strengths of Blood Glacier is the way it uses practical effects to create the mutated creatures. The monsters are suitably grotesque and creepy, without feeling too over-the-top or cheesy. The movie also does a good job of building suspense, with several genuinely tense scenes as the humans try to fight off the monster attacks.
Overall, Blood Glacier is a solid horror movie that balances suspense, gore, and character development. It's not going to revolutionize the genre, but it's an entertaining and well-crafted film that horror fans will enjoy.
