Blood Feud is a 1978 Italian-American drama film starring two of the greatest actors of Italian cinema, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. The story is set in New York City during the prohibition era of the 1920s and centers around the bitter and violent rivalry between two well-known mobster families, the Falcone and the Cerruti.
Loren plays the role of Anna Vagnetti, the widowed daughter of the Falcone family's former boss, who now serves as the matriarch of the family. She is fiercely protective of her son, Vito (played by Eric Roberts), and is determined to keep him away from the dangerous world of organized crime. Mastroianni, on the other hand, plays the cunning and ruthless Don Giuseppe 'Joe' Cerruti, the head of the Cerruti family.
The feud between the Falcone and Cerruti families began years ago when Anna Vagnetti's husband was killed by Joe Cerruti in a shootout. Ever since then, the two families have been at war, with each trying to gain control of the illegal liquor trade in the city. The situation gets even more complicated when Vito falls in love with Maria, the daughter of Joe Cerruti.
As the tension between the two families escalates, the Falcone and Cerruti clans engage in brutal acts of violence, including bombings, shootings, and assassinations. Their turf war spills over into the streets, causing chaos and fear among the civilians. The authorities, including the police and the district attorney, are powerless to stop the two powerful families from tearing the city apart.
Despite the bloody feud, Vito and Maria continue to see each other and dream of a future together. Their love story creates a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil and violence, although they must navigate the treacherous waters of their families' enmity.
The movie is a classic tale of love and hate, loyalty and betrayal, set against the backdrop of a city in crisis. The performances of Loren and Mastroianni are brilliant, as they bring depth and complexity to their characters. Loren's Anna Vagnetti is a strong, independent woman who is determined to protect her family at all costs, while Mastroianni's Don Cerruti is a mastermind of crime who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Giancarlo Giannini delivering a standout performance as Frank, Anna Vagnetti's loyal bodyguard. The film also features a memorable score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone.
Blood Feud is a gripping, intense, and at times brutal film that explores the dark and dangerous world of organized crime. It is a testament to the talents of its cast and crew that the film remains a classic of the genre, over 40 years after its initial release.
