Blondie's Reward, released in 1948, was the ninth movie in the Blondie film series. It starred Penny Singleton as Blondie Bumstead, Arthur Lake as Dagwood Bumstead, and Larry Simms as Baby Dumpling Bumstead. The movie starts off with Dagwood getting fired from his job at J.C. Dithers Construction Company because he was caught napping on the job. On their way home, the Bumsteads spot a stray dog and decide to adopt him, naming him George Washington. However, Dagwood soon realizes that the dog is expensive to care for and decides to take him to the pound. Blondie, feeling sorry for George, comes up with a plan to keep him by entering a slogan contest and winning a $25 prize, which is just enough money to pay for the dog's expenses.
As luck would have it, Dagwood's unemployment doesn't last long, as he gets a job offer from a wealthy businessman named Chester Franey. Franey, who is grateful to the Bumsteads for helping him out of a tight spot, wants Dagwood to work for him as a caretaker of his country estate. Dagwood immediately accepts the offer, but soon discovers that the job is not as easy as he thought it would be. The estate is infested with pests and the previous caretaker had taken all of the tools with him. In addition, there is a rumor that the estate is haunted by a ghost, which is scaring away the workers.
Meanwhile, Blondie is busy with her own problems. She is being chastised by her friends for not doing anything about the dilapidated playground in their neighborhood. Determined to fix the playground, Blondie and her friends hold a fundraiser, but they only manage to raise $18. Luckily, George Washington digs up a treasure hidden in the backyard, which gives them the rest of the money they need.
As Dagwood continues to struggle with his job, he enlists the help of a group of mischievous local boys to get rid of the pests. Their methods are crude, but effective, and soon the estate is restored to its former glory. However, when Dagwood discovers that the ghost is actually a hoax created by Franey's rival, he decides to take matters into his own hands and catches the culprit red-handed.
In the end, Dagwoodâs hard work is rewarded with a surprise bonus, which he uses to buy a swing set for the playground. The movie concludes with the Bumsteads and their friends enjoying the new and improved playground, with George Washington faithfully by their side.
