Blade is a 1998 American superhero horror film directed by Stephen Norrington, with a screenplay written by David S. Goyer based on the comic book character of the same name created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan. The film stars Wesley Snipes as Blade, a half-mortal, half-vampire, who is on a mission to prevent vampires from taking over the world.
The movie is set in a contemporary world where vampires have been living among us for centuries. Blade, who was born as a human but got infected with vampirism at a young age, possesses all the strengths of vampires but none of their weaknesses. Blade has dedicated his life to eliminating all vampires and believes that he is the only one who can do the job.
Blade partners with Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), a seasoned vampire hunter who becomes Blade's mentor and father figure. Whistler is also the inventor of Blade's weapons and gadgets which include silver bullets, UV bombs, and EDTA (a chemical that destroys vampires' ability to absorb blood). Together, they form a team to fight against the vampire underworld, which is ruled by the evil Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff).
The movie begins with Blade hunting down and killing a vampire who has kidnapped a human. Later, we learn that the vampire community is planning to perform a ritual that will make them invincible to sunlight and rule the human race. Blade sets out to stop this from happening and learns that Frost is the one who is behind the plan.
Frost, who has ambitions of becoming the new vampire king, has a secret plan that involves using a special serum to transform himself into La Magra, the blood god. To achieve his goal, Frost must obtain the "Daywalker's" blood and use it to activate the ritual. Blade is the only one with the ability to provide Frost with the necessary amount of blood, and Frost is determined to make him his prey.
Blade, with the help of Whistler and a former vampire scientist named Karen (N'Bushe Wright), work together to stop Frost and save humanity. Karen provides the team with new insights about the vampire race and helps them to develop a new weapon that could defeat Frost.
Overall, Blade is an action-packed, dark, and bloody movie that successfully incorporates a superhero element into a horror movie. The death-defying stunts, explosive fight scenes, and impressive visual effects make it an enjoyable watch. However, the movie is not for the faint-hearted as it contains intense violence, gore, and strong language. Wesley Snipes delivers a powerful and compelling performance as Blade, and Stephen Dorff's portrayal of Deacon Frost is convincingly evil. On top of that, the hard-hitting techno/rock soundtrack of the film adds to the fast-paced nature of the movie, making it a cult classic in the genre.
Blade is a 1998 action movie with a runtime of 2 hours. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.1 and a MetaScore of 47.
