Black Plague [Anazapta] is a historical thriller film from 2002, directed by Albert Martinez Martin. It is set in medieval England in the year 1348, at a time when the country was ravaged by the bubonic plague, or black death. The movie follows the story of a young woman named Isabella (Lena Headey) who travels to a remote village with her husband, a knight named Thomas (David La Haye) who has been sent there by the king to investigate reports of the spreading disease.

Upon their arrival, they find a village in chaos, with dead bodies littering the streets and frightened villagers barricaded inside their homes. They soon discover that the local lord, a wealthy man named Sir Ralph de Vaux (Jason Flemyng), has been hoarding supplies and charging exorbitant prices for them, a fact that has caused great resentment among the villagers. Sir Ralph is suspicious of the newcomers and warns them to leave the village at once, but Thomas insists on staying to investigate the cause of the disease.

As they begin to uncover the truth behind the outbreak, Isabella becomes increasingly disturbed by the behavior of the villagers, who seem to be hiding dark secrets. She discovers that her husband has been keeping secrets as well, and his true motives are not what she had thought. Meanwhile, Sir Ralph becomes increasingly violent and paranoid, convinced that the villagers are conspiring against him. His behavior becomes more erratic as the movie goes on, leading to a dramatic confrontation with Thomas and Isabella.

The performances in Black Plague [Anazapta] are excellent, particularly Lena Headey, who brings a sense of vulnerability and strength to the role of Isabella. David La Haye is also convincing as the flawed but determined Thomas, and Jason Flemyng is suitably menacing as the ruthless Sir Ralph. The supporting cast, including Christopher Fairbank as the village priest, are also strong.

One of the most striking aspects of the movie is its depiction of the grim reality of life in medieval England during the bubonic plague. The scenes of dead bodies piled up in the streets and families torn apart by disease are unsettling and vividly realistic. The movie also explores themes of greed, power, and the lengths people will go to protect themselves in times of crisis. The themes are engaging and they make the viewer question what they would be willing to do if they were in those situations.

One potential drawback of the movie is its slow pacing; some viewers may find it too slow and uneventful. However, the slow pacing also adds to the atmosphere of the movie and allows for a deeper exploration of the characters and the setting. The movie also has some tense and suspenseful moments that keep the audience engaged.

Overall, Black Plague [Anazapta] is a well-made and compelling historical thriller that offers a chilling and realistic depiction of life during one of the darkest periods in human history. The performances are excellent, the themes are thought-provoking, and the setting is immersive. Fans of historical dramas, thrillers, or period pieces will likely enjoy this movie.
